EQUINE ASSISTED THERAPY

Horses have long been a human companion, work ally and friend. Originally prey animals living in herds they constantly observe and react to their environment and naturally respond to the emotions and behaviour of others. Seeking safety and forming social bonds is paramount for their survival. Horses emotional sensitivity and capacity to connect enables them to provide a powerful therapeutic space for reflection and healing and an alternative to conventional room-based therapies.

HOW DO HORSES HELP?

Equine assisted therapy has been evidenced in the treatment of Trauma and PTSD and Addiction. It is also known to support and engage adults, children and adolescence with a range of mental health difficulties including ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety, Complex Trauma and Eating Disorders.

Benefits are drawn from ‘being’ in Nature, as well as forming relationships with a 'non- human other’ when there has been hurt or mistrust in our relationships.

Horses are permissive of all feelings and do not hold grudges, and this can help us to feel and process emotions and move on. Raising awareness of emotions and behaviours that arise in sessions is a powerful in road into how we relate to others and live our own lives.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Sessions are set in a private and secluded rural location. Here the priority is listening to, observing and respecting natural processes...

Equine assisted therapy is an experiential and behavioural therapy, it is NOT horse riding, and riding or prior experience of horses is not required.

Much of the session may be observing and interacting with the horses / animals at liberty in the field or barn. Sometimes this may appear 'unstructured' and this is to encourage an encounter that is authentic and allows a relationship to develop between horses and clients. After the first meeting or two, a therapeutic programme will be developed for each individual, or group.
